HORROR HOTTIES - SCREAM QUEENS FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM
The woman in danger, scantily clad in a tight blood-soaked t-shirt…. Every good horror movie needs one. It helps if they're young and beautiful with a great set of lungs an even better pair of legs, to run from axe murderers, of course.
The 70’s and 80's were owned by Jamie Lee Curtis, the 90’s brought us the teen-horror Scream generation, and now that we’re drawing to the close of the noughties, it’s time for us to explore just how far our scream queens have come.
And what better place to start then the utterly amazing Odette Yustman, star of David S. Goyer's THE UNBORN, a petrifying and intense, super natural horror out DVD and Blu-ray on June 22. Gorgeous Odette has quickly established herself as one of the 21st century’s premium scream queens thanks to her damsel in distress performance in Cloverfield. While two hours impaled on a spike screaming and panting was a good introduction to the genre, it was her star turn in The Unborn that really showed off her talent and indeed, her assets. Just check out the DVD's packshot for a start.
But before we get carried away with horror’s future, it’s probably best for us set our horror babe-o-meter at the begging of the decade - so close the door, make sure the managers out of the office and turn down the A/C because we’re about to embark on a journey through the finest horror hotties to grace your screen this millennium.
2000: Neve Campbell - Scream 3
Neve Campbell pioneered the new wave role of high-school damsel in distress. Her sassy performance as Sidney Prescott in the Scream franchise helped breath new life into the horror genre and it was her “sexual anorexia” that allowed her to stay alive long enough to carry the horror torch into the new millennium.
2001: Monica Bellucci – Brotherhood of the wolves
The Italian bombshell passed her horror initiation way back in 1992 when she played the role of Dracula's bride in Bram Stokers movie… Dracula. Since then she has gone on to star in films such as Brotherhood of The Wolves, The Brothers Grim, The Passion of the Christ and of course, The Matrix Reloaded. She’s even managed to gradually grow sexier in the process, evidence of a signed pact with the devil perhaps?
2002: Milla Jovovich - Resident Evil
Milla Jovovich’s blisteringly hot physique was by far the best thing to come out of the dubiously prolific Resident Evil film franchise. The way she wears those thigh-high boots and uses them to deliver high-flying kicks to a zombie Doberman's heads is nothing short of majestic.
2003: Kate Beckinsale - Underworld
What makes Kate Beckinsale so damn sexy? Her black rubber suit, those bewitching blue eyes, the way she dual wields those twin glock Beretta’s? Whatever your persuasion one thing is for certain, she’s probably the only vampire in film history that you wouldn't mind running into down a dark alley.
2004: Sarah Michelle Gellar - The Grudge
What Scream Queen list would be complete without an obligatory nod to this Vampire slaying hottie. She’s scared us, thrilled us and made us want to stab her wannabe boyfriend, Angel, in the heart with a rusty spear. Like her or loath her, Miss SMG is without a doubt one of the few legitimate Scream Queens of this generation. While she may now have been beaten from her No.1 Scream Queen spot, after all she’s done for horror fans worldwide, there’s really no need for her to hold a Grudge…
2005: Sheri Moon Zombie - The Devil's Rejects
Her Madonna-esque acting ability, combined with the fact that she owes much of her fame to husband-director, Rob Zombie, would make many people question this Devil’s Reject’s place alongside these other horror greats. But when all’s said and done, there's no way that we could justifiably omit this smoulderingly hot blonde with a penchant for knives, liquor and nudity. Having “Zombie” as a surname helps her cause somewhat too!
2006: Jessica Biel - Blade: Trinity
Jessica Biel showed off her true horror versatility when she played the stranded vixen in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, only to strip off a year later and play the sultry Vampire slayer in Blade Trinity. Her career may have flat-lined somewhat recently, with a few of her films going straight to DVD, but that doesn’t change the fact that she’s built just the way we like her.... hot, hot, hot.
2007: Rose McGowan - Grindhouse
The whole planet realised Rose McGowan was an uber-hottie when she showed up wearing a '90s-style spiral shirt in Wes Craven's Scream. After some smaller, unmemorable roles, she finally became the icon she deserved to be, playing Cherry Darling in the Planet Terror segment of Tarantino's mashed-up Grindhouse romp.
2008: Liv Tyler - The Strangers
Liv Tyler was a born a superstar by blood after an unholy union between rock legend Steven Tyler (Aerosmith's frontman) and a former playboy playmate Bebe Buell (Miss November 1974). With sex and Rock 'n' Roll inscribed into her DNA, it was only a matter of time before she was strutting her stuff across movie screens worldwide. Her horror movie introduction came over ten years later in The Strangers and it turns out that her scantily clad performance was certainly worth the wait.
2009: Odette Yustman - The Unborn
Odette Yustman has quickly established herself as the one of the 21st century’s premium scream queens thanks to her damsel in distress performance in Cloverfield. Whilst two hours impaled on a spike screaming and panting was a good introduction to the genre, it was THE UNBORN that really showed off her best assets. I mean an entire poster dedicated her behind… A true assessment of just how far we’ve come.
THE UNBORN, starring Odette Yustman, is available on DVD and Blu-ray 22 June 2009
