Gere's prime ministerial dance

BANG Showbiz
31st March 2005
Richard Gere and Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi stunned a press conference with an impromptu ballroom dance routine. The Hollywood heartthrob met Koizumi to show his support for the prime minister's EU arms ban on China. As the press conference started, Koizumi took Gere's hand and asked: 'Shall we dance?' The handsome actor agreed but only if he could lead. The pair then twirled around the room for a few seconds. Afterwards, Gere - who is in Japan to promote new movie Shall We Dance - described Koizumi as 'charming and spontaneous', while the prime minister returned the compliment, saying Gere was a great movie star and a wonderful person. It is not the first time Koizumi has performed with a Hollywood actor. Two years ago, he sang the Elvis Presley hit 'I want you, I need you, I love you' with heartthrob Tom Cruise.
